In this blog, we have Lilly Red sharing what her journey has been like, the highs and lows of being a professional photographer, the lessons she’s learned, and how she continues to innovate in the world of wedding photography with tools like Aftershoot's Edits 2.0.

How did you become a wedding photographer?

My journey into wedding photography is interlinked with my life. It began in 2011 when I left an unfulfilling job and moved to Qatar to be with my now-husband. There I discovered my passion for photography and found solace behind the lens. But finding the right kind of work was still a daunting challenge.

I moved to the USA in 2015 and embarked on a journey to establish myself as a wedding photographer, facing numerous rejections and challenges. However, a turning point came when I realized the need for authenticity in my work, leading me to redefine my style and clientele.

I embraced styled shoots and began curating my brand, a decision that I was initially doubtful about but it ultimately propelled my career to new heights. Eventually I found my stride, attracting clients who shared my vision and values.

As my business flourished, I recognized the importance of balance and self-reflection, leading me to shift my focus towards education and broader industry contributions. Now, I have transitioned back to Italy, and I'm eager to bring my international experiences and insights to my homeland, inspiring others to pursue their passions and dreams.

What inspires you?

My life and everything not related to wedding photography. 🙂

Growing up in Italy, I was influenced by fashion and architecture in Milan. This background continues to inspire my work today.

Tell us one good thing and one not-so-good thing about wedding photography.

What I love: The community and friendships. Building relationships with industry professionals is amazing and makes the work fulfilling.

What could be better: The gatekeeping and entitlement in the luxury wedding industry. Some vendors lose the sense of collaboration, which can be challenging.

What would you suggest to photographers looking to create their own unique style?

The key is to go on a journey of self-discovery and become the best version of yourself. When you understand that you are unique and embrace who you are, you stop being afraid, which helps you grow and differentiate yourself from others.
