The Page Nobody Told You To Actually Read
But you should. Because you have questions.
And we have answers.
You've spent years, maybe decades, building a business on trust. The last thing you need is your software doing something shady with your images behind your back.
So here's every question we've ever been asked about data, privacy, and how Aftershoot actually works. Just plain answers.
So here's every question we've ever been asked about data, privacy, and how Aftershoot actually works. Just plain answers.
What actually happens to your photos?
Aftershoot runs locally on your machine. For batch culling, editing, and retouching, your images never leave your computer.
The only exceptions:
The only exceptions:
- Culling with learning turned on. Small-resolution versions of your images go to our servers so the AI can assess image scores and retrain a personalised model for you. You can turn this off at album import. When it’s off, nothing goes anywhere.
- Training a custom editing profile. You choose which images it learns from. Those go to encrypted servers to keep improving your profile. This only happens because you’ve decided to build a profile.
Can you opt out of AI training?
Yes. There's a toggle at the bottom right of the album import screen. Turn off “Help improve Aftershoot’s AI” and that’s it. The product still works fully.
It's on by default because the training improves the product for you. But it's yours to switch off, for any album, any time.

Where is your data stored?
On Google Cloud, until you ask us to delete it.
What we store: email address, account info, product usage data, and any images you've opted into for custom profile training.

Can you ask us to delete your data?
Yes. Reach out to support and we'll delete it, at both the account and image level. Timeline varies based on how much data is involved but is generally 7 to 14 days.
Do we share your data with anyone?
We use PostHog and Omni for product analytics. They only capture how you use the product, nothing related to your images or photography data.
We will never sell your data.
We will never sell your data.
Who owns the edited images?
You do. The creative decisions are yours, the copyright is yours. If we ever want to use a customer's work anywhere, we ask first and compensate accordingly.
How does Aftershoot make sure it's building the right things for photographers?
We have in-house subject matter experts: experienced photographers who vet features before we ship. And our co-founder Justin has been a working photographer for over 20 years, which keeps us grounded in what actually matters to a photographer's workflow.
What does Aftershoot actually do with your feedback?
Feedback from support tickets, in-app surveys, product calls, feature requests through the in-app form, and two active Facebook communities (one for all users, one for Founders) all go directly into product decisions and our roadmap.
What will Aftershoot never build?
Features that undercut your business, reduce your creative control, or misuse your data against your will. Anything that violates GDPR and government data protection regulations.
